After a long winter, ELLE Gourmet is ready to toast the start of spring. We’re saying ‘cheers’ with the award-winning Cavas from Heredad Segura Viudas winery – the Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Cava and Segura Viudas Brut Rosé D.O. Cava. The Heredad Segura Viudas winery has been making wine for over 800 years in the lush terroir of the ancient Penedès wine region outside Barcelona. There, both Cavas are produced using traditional cava-making methods, including being aged on its lees in underground caves to achieve the complex and delicious flavour profiles that have ensured that Segura Viudas continues to stand the test of time.
Segura Viudas Brut Reserva is fruity, fresh and complex. The Macabeo is the primary grape variety used, resulting in a palate that is complex and full of flavour, with good acidity and notes of lime and pineapple. The winery’s sommeliers recommend trying the Brut Reserva with preserved seafood, as its light bubbles and citrusy finish complement fish flawlessly. A seacuterie board is a great place to start.
Segura Viudas Brut Rosé is an excellent representation of a Cava Rosado, boasting intense fruitiness on both the nose and palate, a lively colour and finesse. To achieve the perfect balance between fruit and ageing, this rosado is blended from three black grape varieties: Trepat, Pinot Noir and Grenache, and each contributes its unique characteristics.
The Heredad can be traced back to the 11th–century, the time of the Iberian Crusades, and remains an icon of Spanish winemaking to this day. As much as the winery uses traditional Cava-making methods, the company is also forward-thinking and focused on bio-diversity. Just like it has with making exceptional wines, Heredad Segura Viudas has made sustainability and preservation top-of mind.
