This high-quality grape from the Marche region in central Italy is known for its good body and high acidity and offers flavours of citrus and almond and a faint spiciness. The finest examples of Verdicchio wine hail from the Macerata and Ancona provinces, specifically Verdicchio di Materica DOC and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, and are often sold in distinctive amphora-shaped bottles. Verdicchio pairs well with grilled vegetables, seafood dishes and Japanese cuisine.
One of the most famous legacy producers of Verdicchio is Fazi Battaglia. Fazi Battaglia was born in 1949 from the union of two families, Fazi and Battaglia, in a small cellar in the town of Cupramontana. The Angelini family – in particular, Francesco Angelini, founder of the pharmaceutical industry and former mayor of Ancona – took over a few years later and transformed the company into an iconic Italian wine brand. Angelini was also responsible for the unmistakable shape of Fazi Battaglia’s amphora-style bottle. In 1953, when the wine was still not well-known, a design competition was held to find a bottle that would make their Verdicchio immediately identifiable. Angelini wanted a bottle design that had visual cues with ancient references, as well as a unique and distinctive shape. The winning bottle design, created by architect Antonio Maiocchi, was inspired by ancient Etruscan containers.
Fazi Battaglia, a cornerstone in Marche’s wine history, has cultivated 130 hectares of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi vineyards.
